What should I do if my tooth is knocked out?
Teeth are designed to withstand daily pressure from chewing and talking, extreme temperature changes, and a densely microbial environment with harmful bacteria. But as our Eastwood family dental team has experienced, teeth can be easily knocked out under certain circumstances. In the event that your tooth falls out, it is important to act quickly, protect your tooth, and seek emergency care. There is no need to panic because there is a chance that your tooth can be reinserted.
Our Eastwood family dental team knows the steps to take during an emergency:
If your tooth has been knocked out please you should take the following actions:
- Find your tooth immediately. Pick it up by the crown. Do not pick it up by the roots because the roots are made of delicate nerve endings and tissue that can be damaged if touched.
- Rinse your tooth in milk to remove the excess dirt. Using milk is better than water because the calcium in milk will help keep the tooth more moist than water. Only use water if milk is not available. Do not use flavoured milk as sugar damages teeth.
Once your tooth is cleaned you can do one of the following to keep it safe and moist:
- Place the tooth back in the socket gently. If it is too painful to do this because of swelling do not try to force the tooth to position.
- Rest the tooth in your mouth. Place it on your tongue or in between your teeth and cheek
- Submerge the tooth in a glass of milk to keep it alive and stop it from drying.
After your tooth has been properly taken care of it is important to seek emergency help from your Eastwood family dental team.
